Caves
Caves and Canyons You Can't Miss
Gran Canaria is a rocky island dotted with caves and cliffs in all sorts of creative shapes and formations. These were obvious shelter spots for the island's former inhabitants, who adapted many of them into their homes. Today, you can experience the many impressive caves and canyons on your own or through guided hikes. Here are some of our favorites:
Baranco De La Vacas
The Baranco De La Vacas Valley is very popular because of its incredibly beautiful formations and colors in the rocky valley. However, the descent into the valley can be a bit steep as it lies down in a canyon close to the road. It's best to visit the place in the morning or late in the day when the sun's rays align well with the light on the red rock walls.
*Beware of limited parking options.
Caves of Valéron
This is one of the most incredible archaeological excavations on Gran Canaria. Cenobio de Valerón was used in the past as a grain storehouse by the indigenous people, as more than 300 "grain silos" were carved into the soft rock walls to store their supplies. The site is located at the northernmost tip of the island, so plan to spend the entire day visiting this attraction.
Cuevas de la Audiencia Temisa
This cave is not one of the typical tourist attractions as it is a bit more secluded. Once you have found a place to park, it is not too difficult to reach, although the route may be a bit tricky to decipher. Just follow the footpath up the mountain and look for the cave entrance from the backside of the mountain. It is one of the most beautiful and unique caves you can visit in Gran Canaria and definitely worth the trip.
